Why We Designed Few & Far Luvhondo with Families in Mind
When Jacob and I were developing the concept for Few & Far Luvhondo, our two teenage sons were never far from our thoughts. As parents who've spent years trying to balance our passion for travel and conservation with raising children in an increasingly screen-dominated world, we knew exactly what kind of place we wanted to create. The result is a safari experience designed to spark wonder in young minds while satisfying parents' desires for luxury, safety, and meaningful travel.
The Crisis We're Fighting
The statistics that keep me awake at night are sobering: children today spend less than 30 minutes outdoors daily while averaging over seven hours in front of screens. This "nature deficit disorder" affects not only physical health but also emotional development, creativity, and environmental awareness. As someone who found her life's purpose through experiences in nature and conservation, I see family safaris as a powerful antidote to this disconnection.
Everything we've built at Few & Far Luvhondo reflects my belief that children need to be engaged as junior conservationists and future guardians of the natural world, not just passive observers. Jacob and I designed an active, reimagined safari experience that's sustainable, meaningful, and magical for all ages, something that feels raw, wild, and unexplored while remaining safe and comfortable for families.
Accommodations That Actually Work for Families
Having traveled extensively with our own children, I know the difference between accommodations that simply tolerate families and those designed with them in mind. Our six cliffside suites feature expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that create natural entertainment, I can't tell you how thrilling it is to watch a child's face light up when giraffes wander past their private deck.
Each suite includes spacious wraparound terraces with private plunge pools, giving families safe water activities while parents can actually relax. The single-level design eliminates concerns about children on stairs or balconies, while wide shower areas and thoughtful layouts accommodate the reality of family travel.
The butler hatch system has been a game-changer for families, it allows for discreet service delivery without disrupting nap times or family moments. Our solar-powered climate control keeps everyone comfortable, while the comfortable seating areas in each suite create perfect spaces for family time, whether that's reading together or playing cards while listening to the sounds of the African bush.

Personal Guides Make All the Difference
One thing I learned from building our first travel company, Under Canvas, is that personalization transforms everything. At Few & Far Luvhondo, each group of guests enjoys a private safari vehicle and personal guide, allowing families to explore at their own pace, something that's absolutely crucial when you're traveling with children.
This approach lets our guides slow down and stop whenever something captures a child's interest. Whether it's watching massive butterfly migrations paint the sky with color, examining fascinating beetles going about their daily routines, or searching for the "Small Five", those often-overlooked creatures that are just as exciting as their larger counterparts, families have the freedom to explore without the constraints of group schedules.
I love watching our guides work with children. They bring wildlife encounters to life through storytelling and hands-on demonstrations, sharing fascinating animal facts adapted for different age groups. The flexibility of having a dedicated guide means children can ask endless questions and pursue their curiosity without anyone feeling rushed.
The Young Explorers Programme: Conservation in Action
Our Young Explorers Programme transforms young guests into active participants in conservation efforts through wildlife education and interactive activities like harvesting clay from one of our streams to create some clay creatures to reptile handling. But what makes a stay with us extra special is how our dedicated guides can tailor experiences to each child's interests and attention span.
Because each family has their own guide, we can spend as much time as needed watching dung beetles roll their precious cargo or observing the delicate patterns on butterfly wings. This personalized approach teaches scientific observation skills while fostering the deep connections with wildlife that I believe will shape these children's values for life.
Older children and teenagers can engage with more complex concepts like learning about our carbon sequestration efforts or understanding how renewable energy powers their safari experience through our innovative Solyrus system. These aren't abstract lessons, they're witnessing conservation in action and are able to get their hands dirty.
When our conservation researchers involve families in their work, sharing stories from the field and actively engaging our guests, children see that conservation is real, ongoing work done by passionate people. Our partnership with Panthera, tracking our large leopard population and our efforts to restore over 200,000 acres of land show them that their visit contributes to something much larger than a vacation. It’s also very easy for our guests to be hands on, if parents and teenagers would like to participate with one of our conservation teams, they can assist our work by removing invasive species, or repairing waterholes or looking for snares with our anti-poaching team, or join the Panthera crew identifying leopards and tracks.
The Solyrus Experience: A Game-Changer for Families
What truly sets Few & Far Luvhondo apart for families is our Solyrus experience, the world's first solar-powered aerial safari. When this 8-kilometer cable car system is completed in late 2025, it will glide silently above baobab canopies, offering breathtaking panoramic views that eliminate the bumpy rides and slow car rides of traditional game drives.
I'm particularly excited about how this will work for families. Children can spot wildlife from above while learning about renewable energy and conservation in action. This innovative approach makes wildlife accessible to family members of all ages and physical abilities, something that matters deeply to me as we think about inclusive travel experiences.
Cultural Connections That Matter
Our partnerships with local Venda communities create meaningful cultural exchange opportunities that go far beyond typical tourist interactions. Children learn traditional games, participate in storytelling sessions with tribal elders, and learn traditional dances and drumming techniques, experiences that help them understand the deep connections between local communities and wildlife conservation.
I'm always moved when families visit community projects supported by tourism revenue. Children see firsthand how their travel directly benefits local people. These experiences teach global citizenship and the positive impact of responsible travel in ways no classroom lesson ever could.

Adventure for Every Energy Level
The absence of large dangerous game creates unique opportunities for families to explore on foot safely, something Jacob and I prioritized when choosing this location. Gentle walking safaris focus on discovering smaller wildlife and plant identification, while more challenging hikes lead to dramatic ridge viewpoints and forest explorations.
Our mountain biking and e-bike excursions provide exciting alternatives for active families, with trails winding through diverse terrain where fresh animal tracks tell stories of recent wildlife activity. Wild swimming opportunities in natural pools and beneath waterfalls create those cooling-off moments that become treasured family memories.
The cliff-edge infinity pool has become a favorite gathering spot for families. The elevated position offers endless entertainment as wildlife moves through the valley below, turning pool time into wildlife viewing opportunities. I often find families here in the late afternoon, parents finally relaxing with a drink while children safely splash and play.
Luxury That Brings Families Together
Everything about Few & Far Luvhondo's luxury amenities is designed to enhance family bonding rather than separate family members into different activities. Nungo Ravele, our spa therapist, has developed family-friendly wellness experiences that introduce children to self-care concepts while giving parents genuine relaxation time.
Our farm-to-table culinary program celebrates South African flavors with fresh, organic ingredients sourced from our farm and local partners. Family-style meals encourage sharing and conversation, with special dietary requirements handled seamlessly. Our sommelier has curated sustainable South African wines for adults, while children enjoy fresh juices and local specialties.
The simple kitchen setup, where everything is prepped and cooked daily, emphasizes our farm-to-table philosophy while creating meals that highlight the local environment. Children often become fascinated with where their food comes from, another educational opportunity disguised as delicious dining.
Creating Future Conservation Leaders
Research shows that positive childhood experiences in nature significantly influence adult environmental attitudes and behaviors. By providing exceptional family safari experiences at Few & Far Luvhondo, I believe we're contributing to developing the next generation of conservation champions.
Families consistently tell me that Few & Far Luvhondo experiences create some of their most treasured memories. Children who might struggle to sit still in classrooms become engaged observers of animal behavior. Teenagers who seem permanently attached to devices discover the excitement of tracking wildlife and learning about renewable energy through our Solyrus experience.
Why This Matters to Me
I often think about travel as something that can feel indulgent or excessive when you spend significant money on it. But I also know that travel dollars really matter, they have the power to protect places and transform communities when directed thoughtfully.
When families choose Few & Far Luvhondo, they're investing in more than a vacation. They're contributing to conservation efforts while nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards. Our commitment to family experiences reflects my deep belief that today's children will make tomorrow's conservation decisions.
The choice to visit Few & Far Luvhondo as a family represents more than selecting a travel destination,it's choosing to give children experiences that will shape their understanding of the natural world and their role as global citizens. In the stunning landscapes of the Soutpansberg Mountains, families discover that the most meaningful luxury is time spent together in one of the world's most magnificent natural settings, contributing to conservation efforts that will benefit future generations.
